About
We demand a People’s Bailout! Make the rich pay for their crisis!
Bail out poor and working people, not the rich!
The unfolding economic crisis gripping the United States is condemning tens of millions of people to poverty, hunger, and homelessness. Here in Minnesota we see a rising tide of home foreclosures, evictions, and layoffs. By every measure, life for poor and working people is getting worse. Food shelf use is up. Unemployment is rising. Homes and apartment buildings that once housed our families have been foreclosed and are vacant and boarded up.
Tax policy that favors the rich has left Minnesota state government facing a massive budget deficit—at least $4 billion. The budget crisis is expected to continue to grow in the coming months.
Left to their own devices, Governor Pawlenty, along with a host of politicians in the legislature, will enact legislation that serves the self-serving interests of corporations and the wealthy. They will attack public employees. They will try to scapegoat immigrants and the poor. And, they will try to push the burden of the crisis onto our backs.
Low-income organizations, community groups, labor unions, and immigrant rights organizations, along with others who are working for justice, are coming together to meet the effects/challenges of this crisis head on. We cannot afford to allow the funding and programs that serve working and low-income families to be placed on the chopping block. We need solutions to the problems we face.
This legislative session we will place our demands on Minnesota politicians. Join the MN Coalition for a People’s Bailout in the fight for:
Jobs or income now!
Extend unemployment benefits.
Make more workers eligible for unemployment benefits.
Create a public works program that puts people to work now.
Put a moratorium on the 5-year time limit for public assistance.
No cuts to programs that serve working and low-income people!
Place a moratorium on home foreclosures! No evictions for renters in foreclosed buildings
No attacks on immigrants!
Protect public education. No tuition hikes!
No one in Minnesota should be cold or hungry!
No layoffs!
No attacks on wages.
No layoffs for University of Minnesota workers and all public employees in Minnesota.
Tax the rich, make them pay for their crisis!
